The Daniel fast involves having an alternative way of eating healthy, while you focus on your spiritual growth. Some people will do it for 10 days, 21 days or even a month. You will need to pray and get guidance about what’s right for you.
It primarily involves eating fruit, vegetables and drinking plenty of water for the duration. So ideally you will cut out some of those not so good things including refined carbs with all the white flour; including bread, cakes and biscuits. Stop having sugar items; sweets, fizzy drinks, cordials and so on. Eliminate dairy; cow’s milk, yoghurt, margarine. And avoid crisps, and those naughty but often nice snacks and all junkie fast food. So avoid the temptation to take a trip into McDonalds, when passing by.
This is also a time to put away caffeine drinks including tea, coffee and coke. And remember that some decaf drinks also have small traces of caffeine in them. You can see a list of foods allowed during the fast below.
Be super focused
During the time of the fast it is good to reduce or possibly eliminate lots of your usual entertainment and seek to focus more on God in prayer, reading and studying the Bible.
You can find lots of sermons, podcasts and praise and worship on YouTube, on various apps like 'The Bible' or Spotify or it’s equivalent. There are many christian books that you can read during this time.
Identify your WHY
No fast should be started without having an understanding of the purpose it has for you. For each individual, it will be different.
Before starting the fast, pray and find out why you feel that this is right for you to do at this time. Daniel for example, wanted to demonstrate that he was different. Although a slave who had been brought into the kings environment and was given the privileges according, he showed that his dedication to God and his simple way of eating to demonstrate this was better for him and his friends.
The company of others
If you can do the fast alongside others it will help to support you. You can share ideas, keep each other accountable and support each other when temptations come. And they will come!!
What to expect
Expect to start feeling good within yourself after about a week to ten days. But also know that things can get a little challenging from time to time.
After a few days you may feel a bit grumpy. You could also experience having mood swings and get more emotional than usual.
This is the toxins leaving your body. Drink plenty of water to support, this 'wonderful journey' you are on!

Remember to have a scripture that you will focus on throughout the fast. For example,
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14
"Jesus replied: It is because you don’t have enough faith! But I can promise you this. If you had faith no larger than a mustard seed, you could tell this mountain to move from here to there. And it would. Everything would be possible for you.
But this kind does not go out but by prayer and fasting. You can read Matthew 17:16-21.
