10 ways to relieve stress

There are many ways in which a coach can help you overcome stress. Most people would agree, especially those who suffer from Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia that stress is the enemy. One of the biggest lessons I learnt on my journey to being well again was how to manage stress, in this article, I am going to discuss how to overcome stress by sharing my top 10 tips.

  1. Pacing - Pacing yourself is paramount, in other words, slow down and take your time. Pacing helped me to focus on the important things in life and eliminate the less important.

  2. Learn to say 'NO' - This was one of my hardest challenges but learning to say 'NO' to unimportant requests reduced my level of stress.

  3. Delegate tasks - Many of my clients are managers and business owners, they are exhausted because they find themselves doing too much at work. Trust your staff and delegate tasks and jobs to others.

  4. Manage your time - Prioritise tasks accordingly. Start a diary and note the important tasks or jobs that need to be done in the next week or month. Delegate some tasks to colleagues and family. My husband and children helped me with housework such a cleaning and cooking.

  5. Exercise and yoga - The best stress relievers available to us is exercise. Walking really helped with my recovery it gave me peace of mind, I felt relaxed and less anxious. Yoga reinforces the mind-body connections most of my clients say that yoga helps with sleeping and reduces anxiety.

  6. Be mindful - Reconnect with your own body. Be aware of your own thoughts and feelings, focus on the present moment and you will begin to experience things that we have been taking for granted.

  7. Relaxation techniques - Try practising relaxation techniques such as deep/calm breathing and meditation, this can help improve your mental and physical health. I tell my clients to explore different techniques to find out what works best.

  8. Take supplements - One of my clients believes that his illness was brought on by stress so he takes magnesium supplements - I would recommend a company called Bio care their products are great

  9. Treat yourself - It is very important to take a break and treat yourself. I usually book a massage every month and have regular spas every other month. This usually helps me relieve stress and relax my mind, body and soul.

  10. Social interaction - I have been fortunate to have received lots of support from my friends and family but some of my clients would disagree, one client, in particular, noticed that since being diagnosed she has lost friends, this may happen as most people do not know how to handle the illness or differentiate you. You may be feeling sluggish at times and have no energy to meet with friends, but try your best to make time in your diary to socialise with those who are important.
