The benefits of a Vitamin D supplement

The numerous symptoms of a Vitamin D deficiency, such as: all over body pain, mood disturbances, sleep disturbances, neurologic issues and profound fatigue are all also symptoms of Fibromyalgia. Both conditions are also improved by added doses of Vitamin D and Magnesium. Here we are able to see a strong link between a lack of Vitamin D and Fibromyalgia symptoms. When our Vitamin D levels are higher (when we get more sunshine or take a Vitamin D supplement) then the symptoms of Fibromyalgia are also lessened. So, it makes sense to either spend more time in the sun or start taking a Vitamin D supplement (if you are unable to spend much time in the sunshine).

In a recent scientific study, researchers sought to discover whether there is a link between a patient's vitamin D levels and the chronic pain of fibromyalgia. Vitamin D often is called the "sunshine vitamin" because it is manufactured by the body through sunlight's activity on the skin.

The team launched a randomized, controlled trial in 30 women with fibromyalgia who also had low levels of vitamin D. Some of the women took supplements for 25 weeks and then were tracked for another 24 weeks.

Reporting in the February issue of the journal Pain, the researchers said those who took supplements reported less pain and morning fatigue over time than those who did not receive the supplements.

"[Vitamin D] may be regarded as a relatively safe and economical treatment and an extremely cost-effective alternative or adjunct to expensive pharmacological treatment," the lead scientist said in a journal news release.

Vitamin D levels should be monitored in fibromyalgia patients -- especially in the winter when levels can be lower due to less sun exposure -- and adjusted as necessary, he said.
